The Holly and The Ivy Advent Calendar

Countdown to Christmas…….our family loves advent calendars. We have counted the days to Christmas with German houses, English churches, Santa’s Workshops and on felt Christmas trees. I designed this advent calendar for the Junior League of London using London landmarks on the outside and seasonal drawings inside the window.

This charming advent calendar was made this year by the Bride. What a wonderful idea, counting the days with gratitude! I’ll keep you posted with what we discover. I can’t wait to open container number ONE!

My idea this year for an advent calendar centered, what else?…, on flower flinging. Why not a floral advent calendar? My challenge to myself was to create it without spending very much money by using found and recycled materials. This 24” X 24” scrap of plywood is probably a little cramped for the 25 8oz. gingerale cans!

Both silver tissue and tan excelsior are choices for the cans. When the plant material is put in the cans, the tissue (my choice) will hold it in place.

There are so many forms, textures and colors that can be used for each day. Most of them will last without water but the cans can hold water or a tube can be hidden in them, just remove the tissue.

I kept the numbers low-key, writing them free-hand using a tube of copper sparkle glue.

The lichen covered sticks provide some drama and visually a slighter larger surface for the calendar.

Using so many textures creates an exciting advent calendar. Lots of red – sumac, yarrow, holly, rosehips – keeps things lively. One can always add fresh flowers as some come into the house over the holidays. However, I don’t think I can bear to take them all out and add them day by day!

SUSAN: Love, love, love the 8 oz. can Advent Calendar!! I think you are on to something. How you managed to make those dreary little cans into a thing of beauty is just the Magic of Christmas, I guess!!
