Red, White Blues…

Red, White Blues…

Patriotic scottieLong time readers will recognize this patriotic Scotty from a post last summer (  As he is near my flower wholesaler in West Springfield, I passed him just this week and he now has a pair of red/white/blue mod sunglasses.  What a patriotic pooch!

Red White Blue dessertThe supermarket makes it easy to show off the colors of the flag.  Just put them on a pretty plate or tray.  What does royal blue icing taste like?

Decor for holidayWith some food and flowers, why not create your own patriotic tray?  Clockwise from top, red carnation, blueberries, cherries, trachelium and baby’s breath in the center.

Red White Blue flowersThis is the first year I’ve seen this particular grouping of flag flowers at the grocery store.  One is almost tempted to put them in the vase still in the cellophane flag wrapping.

Porch welcomeCelebrating with patriotic flowers is all about the proportions and the mix.  These navy blue ‘fireworks’ are dried allium heads from my garden, sprayed blue.  These made another appearance in Philadelphia in hot pink (see “Supercalifragilisticexpealidocoius!”, Archives, March).

Red glass and callasLet the vase do the patriotic part.  These red glass vases create a dynamic design.

Jaunty wires and flowersIn a corner of the map room, a small cluster of hydrangeas becomes patriotic with starred wires.

Porch flowersOK so not completely red, white and blue, but patriotic nonetheless, this modern mass done for a workshop on Friday, is shivering in the cold temperatures on our porch.

patriotic table designIf the sun would come out, I wouldn’t need incandescent light for this design on the dining table.  These milky white containers, a lovely gift from Mrs. Flower Show, came from the uber-cool shop of Bruno Duarte in Toronto.  These are white roses (not yellow) and red painted midolino sticks linking the two designs on the navy runner.  Since I am building an ark, this is as patriotic as I could get in this Monsoon Memorial Day weekend.  As one correspondent wrote, “Red, White and Brrrrrrrr! “  Hope yours is warm and sunny.

I love the white hydrangeas in Delft, with patriotic wires! Even I can do that one! Happy Holiday!
